When I was in High School my theater teacher knew, in order to attract more kids to the program and to boost ticket sales, he needed to make productions fun and funny. However, most comedic plays are written for small casts and few women. So, with his program growing and the need for comedy, he decided to write his own plays.
My senior year he wrote a play called Pirates, something he had been working on long before ThePirates of the Caribbean came out, but coincidentally was released months before our production. We spent months learning about comedic timing, sword fighting, and trusting ourselves. It was an exciting time for our cast to help shape characters for a production that, one day, could be published.
Fast forward 18 years. Kamron Klitgaard has published over 40 plays and recently did a rewrite of Pirates. This production is the result of that rewrite with a few nuggets left from the original script.
My hope is that my cast will have the same memorable experience that I had, with the rush of adrenaline during a good sword fight, the joy when a joke lands, and a sense of accomplishment after all the hard work!
