Frank Abignale Jr's Thrilling Transformation - A Master Con Artist Whose Story became an Academy Award Nominated Movie and Tony Winning and Nominated Broadway Musical
Frank Abagnale Jr. is no ordinary figure. His story is like something straight out of a Hollywood script, but it's all real—and it's jaw-droppingly amazing. Picture this: A teenage master of deception, pulling off some of the most outrageous cons ever, all before he hit the age of 21. Frank was not only a master of impersonation but also a brilliant forger, tricking everyone from airlines to banks and even the FBI. He famously posed as a Pan Am pilot, a doctor, a lawyer—name the profession, and he likely convinced people he was an expert in it! Frank’s criminal escapades might have been shady, but they were undeniably clever and audacious. His thrilling story of high-stakes schemes, daring escapes, and eventual capture led him to become one of the most infamous figures in criminal history. But his tale doesn’t end with a life sentence—oh no. Frank would go on to help the FBI catch the very kind of criminals he once was, using his talents for good. A perfect redemption arc, right?
From Criminal to Icon: The Movie
In 2002, Frank’s incredible journey hit the silver screen with the film Catch Me If You Can, directed by Steven Spielberg. The movie brought Frank’s story to life, mixing suspense, humor, and the heart-pounding thrill of a cat-and-mouse chase. The lead role? None other than Leonardo DiCaprio, who played the young con artist Frank Abagnale Jr., with Tom Hanks portraying the dogged FBI agent, Carl Hanratty. Their dynamic on-screen chemistry made for a memorable cinematic experience, and Catch Me If You Can became an instant classic. It captivated audiences worldwide, and the film earned multiple awards and nominations—including Academy Award nominations for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Christopher Walken) and Best Original Score (John Williams). Spielberg's direction, combined with a brilliant cast and a suspenseful plot, made the movie a hit.
From Film to Stage: The Broadway Musical
Frank’s unforgettable story didn’t just end with the movie. No, the next stop on his journey was Broadway! In 2011, Catch Me If You Can was transformed into a high-energy musical that captured all the excitement, wit, and charm of Frank’s adventures. The musical, with music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman, took the wild ride of Frank’s life and turned it into a toe-tapping, feel-good theatrical experience. It was packed with colorful characters, lively choreography, and a fast-paced plot that had audiences at the edge of their seats. The Broadway version was directed and choreographed by the multi-talented Jack O'Brien, a Tony Award-winning director who had a knack for making any story come alive. The lead role of Frank Abagnale Jr. was played by the charismatic Aaron Tveit, known for his dynamic stage presence and exceptional vocal range. Alongside Tveit, the talented Norbert Leo Butz brought his comedic chops to the role of Agent Hanratty, and the musical score, ranging from swing-era jazz to upbeat Broadway melodies, was a showstopper. Although the show only ran for a brief time (2011-2012), it left a lasting mark with its dazzling performances, creative sets, and infectious energy. Despite its short run, the show was nominated for four Tony Awards and won Best Actor in a Musical for Norbert Leo Butz. It was a musical that had everyone dancing in their seats, celebrating Frank’s escapades while reminding us that life can sometimes be more thrilling than we ever expect!

A Special Connection to the Real Frank Abagnale
One of the most exciting aspects of bringing Catch Me If You Can to life is its basis in a true story—the incredible life of Frank Abagnale. Our very own cast member, Charlie Peterson, who plays the role of Frank Abagnale in our production, reached out to the real Frank Abagnale, and to our delight, Mr. Abagnale took the time to respond! In his letter, Frank wished our cast and crew the best of luck with the production and shared that he wished he could attend. Unfortunately, he will be in Hawaii during our run, presenting for the FBI—where he has spent decades helping prevent fraud and cybercrime. For those who may not know, Catch Me If You Can—both the hit Broadway musical and the acclaimed 2002 film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks—was inspired by Frank Abagnale’s life. As a young man, he successfully forged millions of dollars in checks while assuming various false identities before ultimately being captured. However, after serving time in prison, he turned his life around and was offered a job working with the FBI. Since then, he has dedicated his career to helping law enforcement and businesses combat fraud, forgery, and identity theft. We are honored to have this special connection to the man whose story has captivated audiences for years, and we are grateful for his kind words of encouragement as we bring his unbelievable journey to the stage!
